Achieve an Eclectic Style

The eclectic style is a refreshing way to incorporate a mixture of furnishings from differing eras and aesthetics. It enables you to select unique items you love and merge them into a coherent arrangement. Eclecticism plays with aspects of old and new, rustic and vintage, colourful and neutral. In a sense it is a pure reflection of yourself. The beauty of this trend is that you are not bound by typical profiles or periods, allowing you a large amount of freedom when decorating. However, it is important to remember that this is not a free for all; you cannot throw a random jumble of objects together and pray for them to work. Aim to find pieces with a common ground in order for them to gel. It’s all about finding a balance.

See below our tips on how to create a harmonious set up of eclectic dreaminess:

Start with a Blank Canvas

All great masterpieces start with a blank canvas, it should be no different with your home. It’s vital not to over clutter the space with busy knickknacks, with every item screaming for the spotlight. We propose you begin with a neutral colour for your walls or better yet keep them classically white. A piece of art  or a bold mirror that enlivens the arrangement is a perfect way to dress the walls without neing too much. This way your carefully selected furnishings will stand out and really have that ‘wow!’ factor.

Handy hint: if you are worried about whether your arrangement works well, take a picture and show it to a friend. Everything is much clearer with a new pair of eyes.

Visual Echoes

So how do you merge your assortment of furniture and accessories together without it looking like a chaotic mess?  Find a common visual aspect that ties them; this may come in the form of a common shape or colour that you can replicate in splashes across the room. This will ensure fluidity amongst the array of styles. We suggest choosing one or two focal points that will act as a gravitational spot and choose an element to echo throughout the space. For example: if your focal piece is a rectangular walnut cabinet, you may duplicate the rectangular motif in the form of an angular mirror and accompanying vase. Throw in some contrasting shapes for balance and your glorious look will be complete!

Visual Echoes

We chose the Storm Coffee Table as our ‘show-stopper'. Its iconic pattern and shape make it the perfect item to centrally anchor the arrangement. The rectangular motif found in the table also makes an appearance in the Ascot Rug and Cousin Parker Canvas. To counterbalance the angles, we selected some rounder silhouettes which can be seen in the Heritage Armchair and Moroccan Pendant Light. This arrangement provides enough personality to be pleasant without being overbearing.

Layered Textures

They say that variety is the spice of life, why not apply this notion whilst decorating your home? Enhance the aspects of depth within your eclectic space by adding a range of complementing textures. Each surface can provide a new sensation for your senses and appeal on a visceral level. If your room has hard wooden floors then offset it with a fluffy rug. Alternatively add a mixture of metallic or porcelain accents to augment the theme.

Layered Textures

Each of these items has been chosen to form an environment of sumptuous textures. It will make you want to lose yourself in a world that delights a multitude of senses. This particular eclectic scene doesn’t try to overpower with colour but plays with neutral tones, differing styles and contrasting surfaces. What cosy lounge would be complete without a fluffy rug underfoot? Lay the Highland Rug upon a rustic hardwood floor for a ying and yang sensation. We have experimented with wood and metal accents, together they complement one another beautifully. You’ll notice we’ve used differing metals, in-keeping with the ‘anything goes’ mentality. The mixture of traditional, mid-century and contemporary furnishing synchronise effortlessly making this a attractive scheme.

Creative Textiles

A prominent identifier for the eclectic tone is the use of magnificently patterned textiles. Scatter a group of cushions upon your sofa that feature jazzy designs for a casual and comfortable look. Be bold with your choices, don’t be bogged down with worries about clashing patterns. You can even add a distinctive rug or curtains that fill the room with lively pattern. The most important thing is to choose designs that you feel especially drawn that radiate with vibrant energy.

Creative Textiles

It’s up to you whether your room is moulded into a neutral or vibrant eclectic space. If loud and quirky is your calling, we have the perfect selection of cushions to get your blood pumping. Bright colours and inventive patterns will make the most impact. If you are struggling for colour inspiration, take lead from another piece already within the space.
