Founded in 2005 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia to create a focal point for women artists from the Gulf, Lahd Gallery soon became a well-known exhibition space representing exclusively MENASA (Middle East, North Africa, South Asia) contemporary art throughout the last decade. Artists are exposed to an international market using an online e-gallery, as well as yearly international pop venues, fairs and events all over the world. John Martono is a master in silk painting and uses his skills to give insight into his own internal thoughts. Silk painting requires delicate, specialist paints, which Martono imports to maintain a high quality finish. Silk painting is so delicate in fact that Martono paints horizontally as opposed to vertically as this prevents the paint from dripping down the canvas.
The use of colour is this piece is truly inspired. The specialist paint has been beautifully and delicately applied to the silk canvas. When looking from a distance it might be mistaken for a traditional painting and it is only up close that the individual finely flowing threads appear to you.
