Scandinavian brand Gubi are the treasure hunters of our generation. Based in Copenhagen's docklands, and fuelled by a passion to uncover overlooked icons from the past and future icons in the making, Gubi are a serious design force receiving international recognition for their work. The result is an eclectic, international collection that blurs the lines between the past and the future, chasing forgotten icons from the 30's to the 70's. Oliver Schick (1969 -) studied product design at the HBK - University of Fine Arts and Design in Saarbrucken. After graduating, he worked freelance for several studios and in 2005 he founded his own studio with a focus on furniture, lighting and interior design and has since worked for companies such as Ligne Roset and Skandiform. He aims to design products 'with character that are timeless and easy to comprehend'. With its understated but effectual details, the Ronde Pendant echoes this philosophy.
This bell-shaped pendant is Oliver Schick's first product for Gubi. Light spills from this lamp downwards reminiscent of the traditional 1970s design, however, a modern spin on the classic sees light also pour upwards out of the lip of the vase opening, casting soft, graduated light at the ceiling. The powder-coated, ultra matt lacquer gives this hand-turned aluminium shade a ceramic feel, beautifully complemented here in Charcoal Black.
